The POV is perfect, the physically immersive sensation is often nauseatingly realistic, but the level of input was never really addressed. It's no use using the D-Pad or analogue sticks, it just doesn't give you the same effect. ![]() After doing a little research I think it was the Video Challenger gun with its barcode scanner-style VHS video system which I can vividly remember being the catalyst for my love of lightgun games and gun peripherals.ĭuck Hunt on the Nintendo Entertainment System, followed by the Super Nintendo Scope and then a Desert Eagle with recoil and a pedal for the PS1 solidified for me that light guns had to look the part when playing this genre of game. Growing up, I remember one of my best friends at primary school having what looked like an ‘80s hairdryer inexplicably working in tandem with a VHS deck, and he was blasting away at a game that reminds me of the style of Mad Dog Macree, as it appeared to be cartoons and video clips of space ships and people with laser guns that you could totally interact with and earn high scores. Initially, as a species, we had to go outside to have fun, but nowadays we can kick back and do virtually anything from the confines of our own homes. Video games have come a long way in the past couple of decades.
